Since the beginning of this year, 1,452 illegal migrants have been detained in anti-illegal migration operations conducted by Turkish security and border forces in Edirne. This was stated by the walia (regional governor) of Odrin, Yunus Sezer, to TRT Haber, quoted by BTA.
64 people suspected of organizing and participating in illegal traffic across the Turkish-Bulgarian and Turkish-Greek borders were also detained. The alleged traffickers have been handed over to the judicial authorities. Many motor vehicles used for illegal traffic were also confiscated.
According to the mayor of Edirne, as a result of the measures taken by the Turkish authorities, illegal migration to Edirne has dropped by more than 95 percent.
“We have taken important steps in the fight against illegal migration. Inspections and controls are carried out 24 hours a day, both by land and by air. The point we have reached on illegal migration is a very good one. The movement of migrants has decreased by more than 95 percent. Strict measures will continue,” he says.
