Basel: India’s Saina Nehwal has been ruled out of the Swiss Open badminton tournament. In the second round, Saina was defeated by Malaysia’s Kisona Selvadurai. But India’s hopefuls PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth have reached the quarter-finals.
Saina suffered a shock defeat in the second round of the women’s singles. Former world number one and Olympic medalist Saina was knocked out by Kisona at the back of a three – game battle. Score: 21-17, 13-21, 13-21. Saina lost the first game.
PV Sindhu advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Nestlehan Yigit of Turkey. Sindhu’s success is for direct games. Score: 21-19, 21-14. The match lasted only 42 minutes. In the quarterfinals, Sindhu will face Michelle Lee of Canada.
In the men’s event, Srikanth defeated Cristo Popov of France to reach the last eight. Score: 13-21, 25-23, 21-11. Srikanth will face Denmark’s Andrews Antonsen in the quarterfinals.
