Sinking Himalayan city…recommendation to demolish houses…people in shock!

by time news

In the Himalayan town of Joshimath, which has been ‘sinking’ due to landslides and cracks for the past few days, a special committee has recommended the demolition of the decrepit buildings.

Joshimath, a town of about 17,000 in northern Uttarakhand, has been a gateway for pilgrims to Hindu and Sikh shrines. For the past few days, there have been incidents of cracks in the ground and burial of land.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Thami visited the area on Saturday to take stock of the situation. He visited areas where houses had large cracks due to seepage of water from inside the land. He then said that the Guwahati institute was in talks with IIT Roorkee and ISRO to find out the cause of the earthquakes.

“We are arranging a suitable place to relocate the people from here and rehabilitate them. Also we are looking into the issues that need to be resolved immediately as it is winter,” he said.

On his instructions, funds have been allocated from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for house rent at the rate of ₹ 4,000 per month for six months to families displaced by landslides in Joshimath.

An eight-member expert committee headed by Disaster Management Secretary Ranjit Sinha, which studied the landslides and cracks, has recommended demolishing the maximum-damaged houses in Joshimath, identifying habitable areas and immediately relocating the people at risk.
