No quarter-finals for Paolini
Jasmine Paolini did not make it to the quarters in Cincinnati. In the round of 16 of the American Masters 1000 tournament, Italy’s number 1 lost in three sets to Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva: 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 was the final score. The reigning champion and world number 2 Coco Gauff also went out early. On the Cincinnati hard court, the 20-year-old American Olympian was eliminated 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 by 29-year-old Kazakh Yulia Putintseva (ranked 34).
Cocciaretto loses to Sabalenka, exits in Cincinnati
Elisabetta Cocciaretto lost 6-3, 6-4 to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, leaving the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open. For the Azura, ranked 67th in the world, it was her first match against the WTA number 3. Finally, on Thursday, Flavio Cobolli beat Luciano Darderi due to the latter’s retirement, qualifying for the round of 16. Darderi withdrew due to a physical issue while trailing 7-6, 3-1 against his opponent. The derby between the two Italians was very tense from the start. Early in the first set, Darderi complained of leg pain that limited his play, but during the match, he seemed to recover, bringing himself back into the game. Cobolli then reportedly told him he was faking. Darderi complained to the referee, who sent both players to continue playing and not talk. At the start of the second set, Darderi did not seem fit to continue and left the court due to injury. The two exchanged seemingly cold greetings at the net. Cobolli reached out to his compatriot on the other side of the court to pat him on the shoulder and apparently to apologize. Cobolli then lost to Polish Hubert Hurkacz in the round of 16.
