Jannik Sinner has reached the quarterfinals at the ATP Masters 1000 hard court tournament in Montreal. The South Tyrolean faced limited problems against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo and won after 80 minutes of play with a score of 6:4, 6:3. Sinner is the defending champion at the Canadian Open, having won the final in Toronto last year against Australian Alex de Minaur with 6:4, 6:1, earning his first Masters title in his career.
Andrey Rublev was not interested in a long back-and-forth. The Moscow player, seeded fifth in Montreal, defeated American qualifier Brandon Nakashima in just 62 minutes with 6:2, 6:2. Rublev will be the next opponent of the world number one from Italy, already on the night from Saturday to Sunday (not before 1:00 AM on Court Central).
Kei Nishikori made a very encouraging return: the injury-plagued Japanese player, who has only won one match this season so far (the first round at the French Open in five sets against Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo), has already reached the quarterfinals at the Masters hard court event in Canada. The 34-year-old prevailed against Portuguese Nuno Borges with 6:3, 6:4 and will meet Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the last match of the day on Court Central (from around 3:00 AM), who benefited from a retirement by Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with the score at 4:6, 7:6 (5) and 3:0.
For Nishikori, this is his first quarterfinal appearance since Rome 2019. Additionally, he is the lowest-ranked quarterfinalist at a Masters event since 1994.
Here is the singles draw in Montreal.
