NEW YORK. The American ride does not stop Jannik Sinner. The world number 1 beat the home idol in three sets in the Italian night Tommy Paul (7-6, 7-6, 6-1), earning the quarterfinals.
Now he will meet the Russian Daniil Medvedev who defeated the Portuguese Borges.
“This result means a lot to me,” said the world number 1 in a press conference at Flushing Meadows, after his three-set victory over Tommy Paul.
Two hours and 42 minutes of meeting in which Sinner says he is convinced he has “raised the level of my tennis”. Starting quietly in the wake of the doping scandal (“I don’t have high expectations for the US Open, I need time to find my tennis and get back to being happy on the court”, he said on the eve), Sinner has grown match after match. And now he is meeting the Russian, his rival in the final of the Australian Open at the beginning of 2024, who gave him his first victory in a Slam tournament.
“The start wasn’t the best but I managed to stay focused – said the Italian after the American evening match – , the key today was to stay in the first set. I’m growing and also tonight, first time in an evening match against an American, I saw positive things; I beat a very strong player who knows how to do everything, moves well, is solid and serves well. It’s always an honor to be part of these matches, in evening matches you feel a lot of responsibility but it’s important to realize that to play a good match you need two players. I’m happy to have been able to raise the level when needed and to be in a Slam quarterfinal again. For me it means a lot”.
