Jannik Sinner (Italy) confirmed his No. 1 spot in the men’s professional tennis (ATP) singles year-end world rankings.
Sinner defeated Tomas Makhac (33rd, Czech Republic) 2-0 (6-4 7-5) in the singles semifinals of the ATP Tour Shanghai Masters held in Shanghai, China on the 12th.
Sinner will be able to maintain first place until the last week of December, regardless of the results of the remaining games.
The ATP Tour world ranking is determined based on performance over the past year. Ranking first in the world at the end of the year means achieving the best results that year.
Sinner is the first Italian player to be ranked No. 1 in the ATP Tour singles year-end world rankings.
Sinner won the Australian Open and the US Open this year, standing at the forefront of a generational change in men’s tennis.
The world’s No. 1 at the end of last year was Novak Djokovic (4th, Serbia). Djokovic has been ranked No. 1 in the year-end world rankings eight times, holding the record for the most in this category.
From 2004 to 2021, the ‘Big 4’ men’s tennis players, Roger Federer (Switzerland), Djokovic, Rafael Nadal (Spain), and Andy Murray (Great Britain), took turns taking first place in the year-end world rankings.
In 2022, Carlos Alcaras (2nd place, Spain) took first place in the world at the end of the year, breaking the monopoly system of the ‘Big 4’, and this time it was Sinner’s share.
Sinner will face Djokovic in the final on the 13th.
