Irish actor Michael Gambon, whose best-known role was that of the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Magic in the Harry Potter saga, has died at the age of 82. The news was announced by his family on Thursday September 28.

He began his career more than sixty years ago, alongside Laurence Olivier, debuting on stage playing Othello in Dublin in 1962. For the British public, he also played Commissioner Maigret in the eponymous series broadcast on the channel ITV. He was knighted for his contribution to the entertainment industry in 1998.

He also gave his name to a corner on the circuit of the car show Top Gear, which he negotiated in spectacular fashion, narrowly missing an accident.

“We are sad to announce the death of Sir Michael Gambon. Michael died in hospital from pneumonia. His wife Anne and his son Fergus were by his side,” we read in a press release.
