Sisi on a historic visit to Türkiye

In response to an invitation from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is heading to Ankara today on an official visit to the Republic of Turkey, the first by an Egyptian president in 12 years.

Egyptian presidential spokesman Ahmed Fahmy explained, “The president’s historic visit to Turkey represents a new milestone in the path of strengthening relations between the two countries, building on President Erdogan’s historic visit to Egypt last February, and establishing a new phase of friendship and joint cooperation between the two countries, whether bilaterally or at the regional level, which is witnessing major challenges that require consultation and coordination between the two countries.”

“The visit is expected to witness in-depth discussions between President Sisi and President Erdogan, in addition to the two presidents chairing the first meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council between Egypt and Turkey, which is scheduled to address ways to advance bilateral relations in various fields, in addition to exchanging views on regional and international issues of common interest, most notably efforts to cease fire in the Gaza Strip and end the humanitarian tragedy in the Strip, and reduce escalation in the Middle East. The two presidents will also witness the signing of a number of memoranda of understanding between the governments of the two countries in various areas of cooperation,” he added.

The Turkish Presidency’s Communications Department said that “as part of the visit, the Turkish President and his Egyptian counterpart will chair the first meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, which was reconstituted in accordance with the joint declaration signed during President Erdogan’s visit to Cairo on February 14, 2024.”

She explained that “the visit will witness a review of all aspects of relations between Turkey and Egypt, and possible steps aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation will be discussed at the council meeting.”

The Turkish presidency statement explained that “in addition to bilateral relations, during the talks, views will be exchanged on regional and global issues, especially the Israeli attacks on Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.”

According to Egyptian media, the statement indicated that “the visit’s agenda also includes signing several legal documents that will contribute to the contractual basis for Turkish-Egyptian relations on the occasion of the council meeting.”
