New Delhi: Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has passed away. The CPM leader breathed his last at the age of 72 in AIIMS, Delhi. He was admitted to AIIMS for a few days. It is said that Yechury had a lung infection. A team of doctors was treating him for several days, but he could not be saved.

Yechury was ill for a long time

News agency PTI quoted party sources and AIIMS Delhi as saying that Yechury was undergoing treatment for a long time. He had a lung infection. Yechury was admitted to Delhi AIIMS on 19 August. He was admitted after complaining of pneumonia and chest infection. The 72-year-old leader was later admitted to the ICU when his condition worsened.

Yechury was born in Chennai

Yechury was born on 12 August 1952 in Chennai. He completed his graduation from Delhi University. He completed his post graduation from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Yechury is survived by his wife Seema Chishti and two children. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti has expressed grief over Yechury’s death. Mufti wrote on Instagram that she is shocked to hear the news of Yechury’s death. I express my condolences to his family.

Yechury joined the CPM as a student leader 50 years ago. He was the general secretary of the party for three consecutive terms. It is worth noting that in 2021, Yechury’s son Ashish Yechury died at the age of just 34 due to Covid.

The family donated the body

AIIMS issued a press release stating that Yechury died on September 12 at 3:05 pm. AIIMS said that Yechury’s family donated his body to the hospital for research and studies.
