The city of Rio de Janeiro has experienced scenes of war in the last few hours. Criminals linked to the city’s largest militia created chaos this Monday (23) after Matheus da Silva Rezende, aged 24, was killed by the Civil Police.

Silva was the nephew of Luiz Antônio da Silva Braga, known as Zinho, head of Bonde do Zinho, a militia that dominates the West Zone of the Capital. He is also one of the targets of the Civil Police operation that ended with the death of his nephew. At least 35 buses, passenger vehicles and a train were set on fire by militiamen in response to police action.

Given the War Scenario, Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) declared that the 12 detained for the crimes will be charged with terrorism.

The attacks caused disruption to the city’s transport system. Videos recorded by public transport users show people doing whatever they can to get to their destination. In one of the records, dozens of people traveled in a stork truck.

At around 6:40 pm, the city entered the Attention Stage caused by the attacks. This is the third level on a scale of five and means that one or more incidents impacted the municipality and affected the population’s routine.

Bus fires blocked several roads in the city, including Avenida Brasil, where a truck was set on fire near Manguariba.

At the end of the night, the situation was already more regular and the city returned to the Mobilization Stage at around 11:15 pm. Until this time, there was around 2 km of congestion in the metropolis. In the late afternoon, during the most intense period of attacks, almost 100 km of delays were recorded, according to COR (Rio Operations Center).
