Marise Conte is the oldest candidate.

“These books they are bold and subversive. I also feel that these are sensual books, in which the issue of the body is important,” commented the president of the jury of the International Booker Prize 2023, France author Leila Slimani, announcing the shortlist of the competition yesterday.

Six books, from 6 countries on 4 continents, are included in the shortlist. They are: “Boulder” by Eva Balthasar translated by Julia Sanchez, “Whale” by Keon Myeong-Kwan translated by Chi-Yung Kim, “The Gospel According to the New World” by Marise Conde translated by Richard Philcox, “Standing Heavy” by Gaz (GauZ’) translated by Frank Will, “Time Shelter” by Georgi Gospodinov, translated by Angela Rodel, and “Still Born” by Guadalupe Netel translated by Rosalind Harvey.

The Booker International Prize is the most important award for a book fiction translated into English and published in Britain or Ireland. The winner’s prize of £50,000 is shared equally by the author and the translator, in recognition of their contribution to the promotion of the great literature beyond the borders of the original language. The winner will be announced at a ceremony at London’s Sky Garden on Tuesday 23 May.
