Six people were arrested for their alleged involvement in a match-fixing case in a match of the King’s Cup disputed in December 2021, the Spanish police announced this Friday.

Those arrested are suspected of having received 30,000 euros thanks to bets on Levante, then in the first division, by 8-0 against CD Huracán Melilla, from the fifth division, explained the police in a statement.

The arrests come a day after the announcement by the regional court in Melilla, an autonomous Spanish city on the North African coast, that six people had given testimony in the case. Among them was a former Huracán player.

The police stated that they opened an investigation after receiving a warning from LaLiga, organizers of the Spanish Championship, as well as from several bookmakers.

Time says it is cooperating with King’s Cup investigations

In a statement published on Thursday, Huracán said it was cooperating with football authorities and the judiciary.

“The club has always defended fair play, transparency and will collaborate with whatever is necessary to fight fraud,” wrote Huracán.

“We want to make it very clear that the moment any active member of the club, whether manager, player, coach or any other employee, is involved, disciplinary measures and the relevant legal actions will automatically be taken”, adds the note.
