MADRID, 27 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter on Mars has reached the milestone of making 60 flights on the Red Planet, also breaking its own speed record.
The aircraft, first controlled powered flight on another worldrose for this flight on September 25, with a speed of 8 meters per second, exceeding the 6.5 meters per second of flight 49 on April 2. In total, it covered 340 meters in 133 seconds at an altitude of 16 meters, NASA reports.
The aircraft, which contributes with its images to plan Perseverance’s surface exploration, totals 13.6 kilometers traveled during 108.8 minutes of flight in the tenuous atmosphere of Mars, since arriving at Jezero Crater in February 2021.
60 flights – and another new record!

Ingenuity is half a meter tall and weighs 1.8 kilos. It has six lithium-ion batteries that are charged with solar energy. Its four carbon fiber blades are arranged in two rotors that rotate in opposite directions at around 2,400 rpm, much faster than a helicopter on Earth.
