Up to 60 civil society organizations have denounced “deficiencies” in the proposal for regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) that the European Union (EU) is working on and have asked the spain that guarantees a “robust and respectful of fundamental rights” legislation.

That category includes biometric surveillance, facial recognition, predictive policing or intentional manipulation. The organizations that have signed the public letter ask to expand the list of systems that fall into that category.

In that case, they also request the elimination of “discretion in the classification process” of these systems and the establishment of “significant obligations of accountability and public transparency for public uses and implementers of high-risk AI systems.” Already in 2021, more than a hundred European NGOs denounced that the obligations were not strict enough to guarantee respect for the human rights.

The letter calls for “guaranteeing rights and a redress mechanism for people affected by AI systems” and promoting greater participation of civil society in the development of technical standards to ensure that the defense of basic rights is established by design. of that technology.

The driving entities are LaFede.cat, Algorace, Fundación Eticas, CIVIO, Algorights, CECU, Institute of Human Rights of Catalonia and Observatorio TAS. All of them ask the Spanish government for “high-level” meetings with the representatives of the ministries.
