SK Hynix is ​​participating in a transportation infrastructure improvement project in Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, where its business is located, to improve the convenience of employee transportation and contribute to regional development.

SK Hynix held the ‘Icheon Bubal Hi-Pass IC Groundbreaking Ceremony’ on the 19th in Daeheung-ri, Daewol-myeon, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, together with Icheon City and the Korea Expressway Corporation. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key figures including SK Hynix President Kim Dong-seop and Vice President Shin Sang-gyu, Icheon Mayor Kim Kyung-hee, Korea Expressway Corporation President Ham Jin-gyu, and local residents.

This Icheon Bubal Hi-pass IC construction project has been in progress since 2019. SK Hynix conducted its own feasibility study and signed a business agreement in 2022 to begin the project in earnest. The IC construction project, which has begun construction, aims to open the Seoul-bound northbound line first by the end of next year and complete construction by 2026. It is expected that Icheon’s transportation conditions will be greatly improved.

SK Hynix and Icheon City have agreed to jointly shoulder a total project cost of 54.4 billion won. The project is specifically comprised of the construction of Bubal Hi-pass IC and the construction of a connecting road. In particular, the Bubal Hi-pass IC connecting road is a 1.8km section of urban planning road connecting Gajwa-ri, Bubal-eup, near the SK Hynix headquarters, and Daeheung-ri, Daewol-myeon. It is expected to improve the convenience of movement for SK Hynix employees. Icheon City began expansion work on the 7th of last month. In connection with this, Korea Expressway Corporation plans to build an IC in Godam-dong and Daeheung-ri, Daewol-myeon.

Currently, the only interchange connecting SK Hynix headquarters and Yeongdong Expressway is Icheon IC. Traffic congestion frequently occurs during times when local residents and companies’ traffic demands overlap.

When the Bucheon Hi-Pass IC is newly built, the route of the daily commuter buses used by SK Hynix members, which average about 1,000, is expected to be shortened by more than 5 km. In addition, semiconductor-related logistics using the Icheon IC are expected to be dispersed to two locations, improving transportation conditions for residents.

Mayor Kim Kyung-hee of Icheon City said, “Once the road connecting to the Bupal Hi-Pass IC is completed, traffic congestion in the surrounding area will be relieved and accessibility to SK Hynix will improve,” adding, “I expect this to greatly contribute to strengthening corporate competitiveness and revitalizing the local economy.”
