A study carried out by the consultancy Korn Ferry reveals that the future of work is closely linked to sustainability. The “Future of Work” survey points out that 60% of millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) say they would feel more inspired to work at a company that adopts environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies.

The data also highlight that 54% of respondents would consider changing careers to enter the sustainability area. This movement is generational and reflects the growing importance of ESG in the economy and the job market. The acronym, mentioned for the first time in 2004 during a UN conference, has been gaining relevance in companies, so much so that today 95% of Brazilian institutions state that ESG is on their priority agenda.

With sustainability and ESG gaining prominence in the corporate world, the demand for professionals specialized in the area is constantly growing. Companies are increasingly looking for qualified candidates to implement ESG-related strategies, however, it has been difficult to find professionals with the necessary knowledge.

Research by the CFA Institute analyzed LinkedIn profiles of finance professionals and found that less than 1% of applicants are qualified for ESG-related jobs. This shortage tends to get worse in the coming years, as the report “Future of Jobs”, by the World Economic Forum, points out that the specialist in ESG is the second profession in the list of careers of the future, with the forecast of the emergence of 1 million new vacancies in the area until 2027.

Faced with the limited supply of qualified professionals, remuneration becomes attractive. According to the “2023 Salary Guide”, a professional specializing in ESG can receive salaries ranging from BRL 6,000 to BRL 35,000, depending on factors such as seniority, company and industry.

For example, in the financial market, which has historically offered higher salaries, ESG specialists are likely to be even better compensated compared to other sectors.

Thus, it is evident that the search for professionals specialized in ESG is a growing trend, driven by the need to promote sustainability in companies. The appreciation of these professionals reflects not only the importance of the topic, but also the positive impact that the adoption of sustainable practices can bring to business and to the future of work.
