In a surprising turn of events, a 27-year-old man has been acquitted by the Visby District Court after being charged with minor damage for spray-painting a grinning sheep on a wall belonging to Region Gotland. The incident took place during a September night earlier this year and attracted the attention of a police patrol.
As the man neared completion of his artwork, he attempted to flee the scene on a bicycle but was apprehended by the police. During questioning, he admitted to painting the sheep but maintained that his intention was not to destroy or deface public property. Instead, he claimed that he wanted to “offer free art to passers-by” and express himself artistically.
Interestingly, the man cited the symbolic significance of sheep in Gotland and claimed that it inspired him to create the artwork. He expressed his reasoning during questioning, stating, “I saw that sheep were a symbol of Gotland and then it felt even better to paint it.”
While the man faced charges initially, the Visby District Court reached a surprising verdict. The court reasoned that the location where the graffiti was painted had “relatively hidden” cultural-historical value and deemed the sheep to be an artwork showcasing “a certain measure of artistic and technical skill.” As a result, Region Gotland is not seeking any compensation for the painted sheep.
According to the court’s assessment, the presence of the grinning sheep on the cracked concrete facade actually enhanced its aesthetic value. The court concluded that the artwork did not cause a significant deterioration to qualify as vandalism.
In addition to being acquitted, the 27-year-old will have his spray cans returned by the police, further highlighting the court’s approval of his artistic endeavor.
