Lareb has informed the Medicines Evaluation Board (MEB) about these reports
Until May 16, 2022, Side Effects Center Lareb received 48 reports of lichen planus after the administration of about 36.2 million corona vaccinations. Lichen planus is a disease of the skin and/or mucous membranes in the mouth or genitals. Lareb has informed the Medicines Evaluation Board (MEB) about these reports.

Lichen planus can occur at any age. It is slightly more common in women than in men. The age at which lichen planus most commonly occurs is around age 30 for men and around age 50 for women. The cause of lichen planus is often unknown. Lichen planus is thought to be a form of an autoimmune disease.
Notifications to Lareb
Lareb received 21 reports of lichen planus on the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine (Comirnaty). This vaccine is also the most widely given in the Netherlands. In addition, 16 reports related to the Moderna vaccine (SpikeVax), 7 reports to the AstraZeneca vaccine (Vaxzevria) and 4 to the Janssen vaccine (Jcovden). Two reports came from Lareb’s questionnaire study into side effects of corona vaccines.
The age of the patients ranged from 32 to 75 years and the mean was 57 years. The patients developed the disease on average 7 days after vaccination. In 37 reports it concerned the new development of lichen planus. Eleven reports concerned an exacerbation of existing complaints. There were 7 patients who developed symptoms after multiple vaccination moments.
Lareb has informed the MEB about these reports. The fact that these reports are seen after vaccination does not mean that lichen planus is also a side effect of the corona vaccine.
