Last week, Toms Skujins earned UCI World Ranking points in two cycling races – “La Flèche Wallonne” (12th place and 48 UCI points) and “Liege – Bastogne – Liege (48th place and 15 UCI points). At the moment, the “Lidl-Trek” driver, who has completed the most successful spring event of his career so far, is taking a breather in his native country to return to the competition circuit for the summer event with new vigor.
In the current UCI World Ranking, which is updated once a week, Toms Skujiņš has climbed three places. The Latvian currently ranks 28th among 3,329 ranked athletes. This is a new career record for Tom and one of the biggest achievements among all cyclists in our country since independence. On an annual basis, Skujiņš managed to earn 1863 points. He pushed such men as Tour de France ex-champion Geraint Thomas and one of the leaders of the French national team, Thibaut Pinault, lower.
The leader is still Tadej Pogachar. The Slovenian increased his lead over severely injured Dane Jonas Wingegaard by 800 points after winning Liege – Bastogne – Liege. Tadej currently has 6558 points and Jonas 5970 points. The TOP 3 is completed by another cyclist, Remko Evenpool (4897), who experienced a fall in the Tour of the Basque Country.
Among the other Latvian cyclists in the TOP300 ranking are also Krists Neilands, who has the 269th place (348 points) and Emīls Liepiņš, occupying the 299th place (312 points).
124 countries have entered the nation ranking. Latvian men have accumulated 2879 points. This allows to maintain the very respectable 23rd place for a longer period of time. 269 points separate our cyclists from 22nd place, where Canada is currently.
Latvia is followed by Eritrea (2674), Poland (2642) and the Czech Republic (1836). Estonia is currently in 37th place (1090), and Lithuania is 56th (585).
With this result in the ranking of nations, our men could compete with four athletes in the group race at the upcoming world championship, which will take place in the Swiss city of Zurich at the end of September.
