The mountain party Skutshorn in Valdres is now under continuous monitoring.

NVE fears that a landslide will cause a dangerous tidal wave in Vangsmjøse.

This is what Norway’s Directorate of Water Resources and Energy writes in a press release.

– We have test run the system through the winter. Everything works as it should, so now we are ready to formally switch to continuous monitoring of the mountain, says geologist Kjetil Indrevær in NVE.

In the event of movement in the mountains, NVE will be able to receive data and capture this in an early phase.

– This means that the population will be notified well in advance, probably many weeks or months before a major landslide occurs, says Indrevær.

Skutshorn is now one of ten unstable mountain areas in Norway that are monitored around the clock.

The mayor himself lives in the area

The lake is located in Vang municipality in Innlandet. The municipality has over 1,600 inhabitants.

And the mayor of the municipality, Jørand Ødegård Lunde, is satisfied that NVE now has the measurements in place.

– We are very happy that we are now in place, and that we are one step further in this process, she says.

She herself lives in the area that could be taken by the tidal wave. The fact that the mountain is now measured makes it possible to prepare in the event of a tidal wave.

– Nothing happens overnight, she says.

She further says that there is no panic situation in the municipality as a result of the movements in the mountains.

– But it is demanding for a municipality to receive such a message. We have to deal with the facts, and are happy that it is now being monitored, she says.
