SKY 11 Issues Warning About Diarrhea Outbreak in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province

The Disease Prevention and Control Office 11 in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province has issued a warning about a potential outbreak of diarrhea, urging people to take precautions to avoid getting sick. The office is especially concerned about school-age children, who are more susceptible to the disease.

Dr. Kraisorn Tothapthiang, Director of the Disease Prevention and Control Office 11, explained that with schools back in session, students are gathering in groups to participate in various activities. This increases the risk of contamination from unclean food and water, which can lead to the spread of germs and bacteria.

During the humid and cool weather, certain types of germs, such as norovirus and rotavirus, thrive, leading to severe diarrhea in young children and the elderly. According to information from Health Zone 11, there have been a total of 41,835 cases of acute diarrhea reported from January to November 2023, with the most affected age groups being 0-4 years, 5-9 years, and 15-24 years.

Phuket Province has been identified as having the highest rate of illness per 100,000 people, with a trend of increasing cases each year. The transmission of diarrhea can occur at any time of the year and is often caused by consuming contaminated water or food, leading to symptoms such as stomach pain, loose diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

The Disease Prevention and Control Office 11 recommends that individuals adhere to the principle of “eat cooked, hot, and clean” to prevent illness. This includes consuming freshly cooked food, thoroughly heating stored food before consumption, and practicing proper hand hygiene. Additionally, individuals are advised to drink clean and safe water, as well as seek medical attention if they experience severe symptoms.

It’s important for the public to take these preventive measures seriously in order to reduce the risk of a diarrhea outbreak. For more information, individuals can call the Department of Disease Control hotline at 1422.
