Skyguide responded to the glitch by convening a task force. Already in April, Skyguide CEO Alex Bristol had announced a temporary capacity reduction until June 2024 to create a safety buffer and more leeway for air traffic controllers.

Capacity restriction has been lifted

Although two software updates were made, Skyguide spokesperson Barrosa stated that the capacity reduction would remain in effect for the time being. However, in a statement to 20 Minuten, Skyguide has now indicated that the capacity restriction of 20 percent for arrivals, departures, and transit traffic was already lifted on July 12. This decision was not publicly communicated, as it was considered an internal operational matter, according to the Skyguide spokesperson. “Our partners were informed about the lifting.”

The capacity reduction was criticized as the safety margin of 20 percent was deemed too high. Barrosa defended the measure as a necessary step for safety in the airspace and emphasized that the reduction was only applied to the maximum available capacity. “If capacity was already reduced, for example due to bad weather, no additional reduction was made.”

No capacity restrictions during the Crowdstrike incident

Last Friday, in the midst of the summer holidays, a massive IT failure worldwide caused chaos – Zurich Airport was also affected, and for a period, no landings were possible. The cause was a faulty software update from the cybersecurity platform Crowdstrike.
