The Hungarian State Opera has announced a Slavic season for its 140th season in 2023/24. The program, which includes 14 premieres, includes a total of forty works that are somehow related to Slavic culture.

Plácido Domingo and Anna Netrebko will give concert performances, and the Opera Orchestra will compose its concert program mainly from works by Slavic composers, according to a press conference in the Eiffel workshop. As part of the Theater Olympiad, the season will open on September 9 and 10, 2023 with two foreign guest performances in the opera house: Mozart’s Così fan tutte, co-produced by the Komische Oper Berlin and the Zurich Opera House, and Szymanowski’s König Roger, performed by the Kosice State Opera.

For the first time in its history, the Hungarian State Opera is staging its own production of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka. Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni will be performed in Budapest from March next year in a 2008 production by German director Claus Guth. Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov will be shown in the original version for the first time in Hungary.
