Public protests and uprisings can certainly play a positive role when supported by an emancipatory vision – just recall the Maidan event in Ukraine (which was a real social explosion, far from a CIA-orchestrated plot) and the ongoing protests in Iran sparked by Kurdish women refusing to wear chadors. Even the threat of violence is sometimes necessary: our media likes to mention the rise to power of the ANC in South Africa and the peaceful protests led by Martin Luther King in the US as the two historically successful negotiated solutions – in both cases it is obvious that the (relative) victory came only because the establishment feared violent resistance (from the more radical wing of the ANC as well as American blacks). In short, the negotiations were successful because of this ominous threat. However, this is now most definitely NOT the case in France.
