The Sri Lankan team toured England last year and played 3 T20 and 3 ODIs.

The three Sri Lankans Niroshan Dikwella, Kusal Mendis and Dhanushka Gunathilaka left the Corona defense ring causing controversy. The video of Mendes and Dickwella in a public place called Durham City Center was posted on social media. Both had masks on their hands but neither was wearing it. Someone in a car in the city center area took the video without their knowledge. Dhanushka, who left with them, was not featured in the video.

Following the release of the video, all three players were questioned about leaving the Corona safety ring. All three of them admitted to going outside the safety ring. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLCB) has suspended the trio, who are the first choice of the Sri Lankan team in the ODI series, from the UK after suspending them for causing harm to Sri Lankan cricket. The three returned to Sri Lanka by plane. The trio were then banned from playing in international matches for a year. As a result, the trio did not play in the T20 World Cup.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has canceled the one year sentence imposed on the three within six months. Niroshan Dikwella, Kusal Mendis and Dhanushka Gunathilaka have been allowed to play in international matches from January 7. The trio will also get a chance to play in the next Zimbabwe ODI series if they prove fit.
