Tokyo: Proper sleep is essential to maintain physical and mental health. Problems like insomnia, narcolepsy, and daytime sleepiness can cause serious health problems. But insomnia is becoming more widespread in the world. Reports indicate that between five and seven million Americans suffer from insomnia. Research results indicate that 15 percent of the Chinese population suffers from insomnia.

It is in this context that a new study has come out which shows that insomnia is more common in sedentary people and that good exercise can help improve the quality of sleep. A team of researchers from Japan, Canada and Thailand, led by Associate Professor Javed Koosari of the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), conducted the study on the subject. They tried to find out the relationship between the level of physical activity and the quality of sleep. The research results have come out through the publication ‘Scientific Reports’.

‘The experiment was carried out on Japanese men between the ages of 40 and 64. Substitution method was applied to them. That is, for the first hour the participants were given light activities, then for the next hour they were put into vigorous or moderate physical activities. After recording their activities for seven days, they gave a questionnaire to know the quality of their sleep.’- About the experiment Prof. Javed said.

Prof. Javed also said that more studies are needed on gender-based differences behind sleep deprivation. In any case, Javed added that their current study confirms the role of physical exercise in getting good sleep.
