Watch the video: Sleep expert shares tips for young parents – don’t “wait until you get desperate”.

Getting children to fall asleep can sometimes be quite a task. Catherine Hart, sleep expert and mother of a six- and four-year-old daughter, wants to help.

The New Zealander from Mount Maunganui says she has helped thousands of exhausted parents get their little ones to sleep.

“There are many misunderstandings and it is an extremely controversial topic – but parents underestimate what they can do.”- Catherine Hart

She warns of one piece of advice in particular: “It is often recommended that the right age to start sleep training toddlers is between four and six months.” -Catherine Hart

But Catherine Hart is convinced that parents shouldn’t wait until they are desperate, but should start sleep training their babies after three months. The forty-year-old explains this by saying that the older babies get, the more their habits become established and it becomes more difficult to correct them.

According to Catherine Hart, with these five sleep training tips nothing should stand in the way of a restful sleep:

1. Maintain a consistent and predictable daily and sleep schedule – babies love routines and thrive in them.

2. Put your baby to sleep within the age-appropriate time window.

3. Don’t put your baby to bed too late – they sleep best in the first half of the night.

4. Establish a bedtime routine – We know from studies that children with a consistent bedtime routine from an early age are more likely to go to sleep earlier, take less time to fall asleep, sleep longer and wake up less.

5. Teach your baby to fall asleep independently.

The right sleeping environment should also help: “Light plays an important role in the sleep and wake cycle.” -Catherine Hart

The room should be pitch black. A noise machine with a constant noise can also ensure a uniform ambient atmosphere and mask all household or outside noises. The right sleeping clothes should not be underestimated and should be adapted to the room temperature. More
