Fewer deaths on the roads. This is the conclusion drawn Friday by Road Safety in its monthly report for July. A total of 305 people died on the roads of France in July 2023, a decrease of 10% compared to the same month in 2022.

This decline in road deaths in July comes after consecutive declines of 5% in June, 19% in May and 13% in April.

Deadliest month for scooter riders

According to provisional estimates from the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), 136 motorists and 84 users of motorized two-wheelers were killed last month. “The accident rate for the month of July, down overall, should not hide a heavy toll for users of soft mobility”, including 22 pedestrians and 25 cyclists, notes however Florence Guillaume, interministerial delegate for road safety, quoted in a press release from ONISR.

With 10 deaths among users of motorized personal transport devices, such as scooters, “the month of July holds the sad record for the heaviest toll for this category”, she continues. And to recall the “necessary” respect for traffic rules and “vigilance” and the usefulness of wearing a helmet, “strongly recommended”.

The observatory also counts 1,558 seriously injured on the roads of France, a drop of 7% compared to July 2022, a balance sheet also below that recorded in 2019, the pre-pandemic year.

In the overseas territories, the toll is also down in terms of road deaths (17 dead, a drop of 29% compared to July 2022). The number of injured, on the other hand, is on the rise (359, +10%).
