Posts with the hashtag (#) ‘TrumpisWeird’ targeting former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, are spreading like wildfire on social media.
Since President Joe Biden, the oldest president, dropped out of the Democratic presidential race, Democratic supporters have been intensively distributing videos of Trump’s past rallies and gaffes.
As Republican Vice Presidential candidate Senator J.D. Vance has caused controversy with his past remarks, there are growing concerns both inside and outside the Republican Party about the “bad-mouthing instincts” of Trump and Vance, and the Democratic Party seems to be focusing its firepower on this. On the other hand, Vice President Harris, who has virtually secured the Democratic presidential nomination and is chasing Trump, is seeing her favorability rating soar and continue to rise day after day.
● After Biden’s resignation, ‘Trump is weird’
According to the hashtag rankings of X (formerly Twitter) on the 28th (local time), ‘Trump is weird’ was found to be the 11th most used hashtag in the United States on that day.
The hashtag was first used in 2016, when Trump was elected president. But it has been rekindled recently after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who is being mentioned as a possible running mate for Harris, used the phrase again. In an interview with MSNBC on the 24th, Walz called Trump and Vance “a bunch of weirdos,” and said, “It’s like they’re running for the misogynist club.”
Vice President Harris also quoted Governor Walz at a sponsor event the next day, saying, “Trump is relying on wild lies about my career,” and “Trump and his running mate are weird.” Accordingly, “Trump is weird” is being used as a Democratic slogan to criticize candidate Trump.
The Democratic Party supporters have been distributing videos of Trump’s ramblings or difficult-to-understand remarks from his past campaign rallies, along with the hashtag “Trump is weird.” Among the videos, there is one where Trump says at a campaign rally in North Carolina on the 24th, “The movie ‘Silence of the Lambs’ is a true story,” and “Hannibal Lecter is a lovely man. I’d like to have dinner with him.” It appears to be an attempt to compare illegal immigrant criminals to the cannibal criminal Hannibal Lecter from the movie, but it is being criticized as an inconsistent statement.
Candidate Trump also made a remark that was difficult to understand during his first rally on the 21st after the assassination attempt, saying, “America is sinking because of the Biden administration,” and “I would rather be electrocuted than jump off a sinking boat and get eaten by sharks.” Regarding this, Governor Walz said in an interview with CNN on the 28th, “Trump says all the crazy things that come to his mind, like Hannibal Lecter, sharks, and electrocution,” and “It’s just bizarre behavior.”
● Trump-Vance’s verbal abuse risk VS Harris’s favorability rating soars
The analysis is that the Democratic Party’s concentrated offensive against Trump’s nonsense is largely due to President Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race. With President Biden, who had been embroiled in controversy over his age due to frequent verbal gaffes at campaign rallies, stepping down, the Democratic Party is launching a counterattack against Trump’s problematic remarks. In an interview with Fox News on the 28th, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg claimed, “Trump has clearly aged and become more bizarre than when I first saw him.”
Some say that the Republican Party has become more vulnerable to such attacks from the Democratic Party by nominating Rep. Vance, who has stirred controversy with his radical remarks, as its vice presidential candidate. In an interview with CBS on the 28th, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “Vance is more bizarre, extreme, and erratic than Trump,” and “Trump’s nomination of Vance is the best choice for the Democratic Party.”
Meanwhile, according to a poll released by ABC News on the same day, Vice President Harris’s favorability rating rose 8 percentage points from a week ago (35%) to 43%. Her unfavorability rating dropped from 46% to 42%. In contrast, Trump’s favorability rating dropped 4 percentage points to 36% in one week. Vice President Vance’s favorability rating stood at 24%, while his unfavorability rating rose 8 percentage points to 39% in one week.
Vice President Harris’s presidential campaign said it had raised $200 million in donations in the week since announcing its candidacy, and that it had attracted about 170,000 new supporters.
