Slippery Chaos on Southern and Central Sweden Roads Causing Over 40 Accidents

Southern and central Sweden are experiencing treacherous road conditions, leading to over 40 reported traffic accidents since lunchtime. The Bergslagen police region has been particularly hard hit, prompting urgent warnings from both the police and the Rescue Service in cooperation (RiS).

Lars Edelin, press officer at the Bergslagen police region, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “There have been a lot of accidents. The roads are very slippery, keep your distance.” Emil Berggren of RiS echoed this sentiment, urging drivers to exercise caution and take it easy on the slippery roads.

The difficult road conditions extend across a wide area, with warnings issued by the Swedish Transport Agency along the European roads from Gothenburg to Västervik and from Fagersta to Falun in Dalarna. In Härjedalen, warnings for snow and ice on the roads have also been issued, affecting routes from Funäsdalen to Sundsvall and in Haparanda and Pajala.

The hazardous road conditions have led to several individuals requiring medical attention following collisions and single-vehicle accidents. Road closures have also been necessary in some areas to manage the aftermath of these incidents.

In light of the widespread challenges posed by the slippery roads, authorities are appealing to the public to exercise extreme caution when traveling. Drivers are urged to adjust their speed, increase their following distance, and remain vigilant to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
