Slow WiFi: How to make your wireless network faster | life & knowledge

by time news

Are you also one of those people whose Netflix films keep jerking? Where online conferences are more like a slide show and where music is not streamed because you simply cannot rely on the technology? Not me.

And this despite the fact that I live in a house that, thanks to reinforced concrete ceilings and underfloor heating, is a real WiFi nightmare. After all, it is not difficult to set up a functioning, fast wireless network.

Two steps against WiFi trouble

First step: Place the router neatly. The device should not stand or hang on the floor and should be as free as possible in the room. Avoid being near water pipes (including heaters) and electrical devices such as televisions, but also washing machines, induction cookers or microwaves.

Second step (which you can often save yourself after step one): Get a WLAN repeater or access point.

The reference to WiFi 6 is extremely important when buying a new router. The standard is optimized to deliver fast data rates even in areas with many WiFi networks and devices

Important: In addition to WiFi 6, the system should also support a so-called mesh standard. This ensures that it is not you, but the network itself, that ensures that devices are always registered with the cheapest radio station.

Unfortunately, the different mesh systems are not yet compatible with each other. So you have to decide on a manufacturer when converting.

My tips:

▶︎ Who starts newif you buy a current Fritzbox like the 7590AX (from 250 euros) as a router, you can extend the range of the network with devices like the Fritz WLAN repeater 1200 AX (from 85 euros).

▶︎ Who an existing network If you want to upgrade, buy the Magic 2 Wifi 6 from Devolo (from 240 euros). This uses the power lines in the house for data transmission, making it possible to turn every socket into a new WLAN radio distributor.

Devolo's Magic adapters combine two clever technologies: Mesh WLAN according to the Wifi 6 standard and Powerline. In this way, data is quickly transported through the house via the power cable and only transmitted further at the counterpart of the system

Even if that sounds complicated now – I promise: The conversion will take no more than an afternoon and you will quickly recoup the time you invest because you no longer have to wait for streaming films or no longer have to say “Can you” with video conferences hear me?” need to ask.
