Road users will no longer lose license points for speeding below 5 km/hour from January 1, 2024, according to a government decree published Friday in Official newspaper. “Small” speeding, less than 5 km/h, currently punishable by a reduction of one point on the driving license and a fixed fine ranging from 68 to 135 euros, will from January only be punished by contravention. The reduction of one license point will only apply for speeding between 5 and 20 km/h.

This “common sense” measure was announced in April by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin. On the contrary, it was described as “nonsense” by the League Against Road Violence. In 2020, of the 12.5 million tickets sent for speeding controlled by radars, 58% concerned excesses below 5 km/h, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

In total, 3,267 people died on the roads of mainland France in 2022, according to a consolidated report from Road Safety, a stable level (+ 0.7%) compared to 2019, the last reference year before the pandemic.
