Title: Smallpox Monkey Cases Increase in Bangkok, Health Authorities Take Action

Date: July 23, 2023

Bangkok’s Department of Health has reported an alarming increase in smallpox monkey cases in the area. According to the Ministry of Public Health, there were 31 cases of smallpox monkeys in Bangkok during June 2023, surpassing the previous month’s count of 21. This increase signifies a 0.5-fold rise, with 27 cases reported among Thais and 4 among foreigners. Among these cases, a significant number of individuals were men who have sex with men, with 14 of them having a history of HIV infection.

Despite this worrisome trend, health authorities have categorized the disease as being of moderate risk, as it is mostly restricted to a specific group. The transmission pattern closely resembles other sexually transmitted diseases, since close contact is required for infection, typically through sexual activity. While severe symptoms have not been observed, it is crucial to address the rising incidence among men who have sex with men. Risky behaviors such as engaging in one-night stands with unknown partners and frequenting high-risk locations like parks, public toilets, fitness centers, and saunas have been identified as contributing factors.

To contain the spread of the smallpox monkey virus, authorities recommend that saunas and entertainment venues exclusively for gay men refrain from providing services. Individuals who frequent these venues are advised to notify local district offices or public health service centers. Additionally, a public awareness campaign has been launched to educate the public about the symptoms, nature of the infection, and preventive measures for the disease. It is crucial to note that although condoms prevent most sexually transmitted diseases, they do not provide protection against smallpox monkeys due to the likelihood of close contact.

Mrs. Lertlak Leelasaewuang, the director of the Medical Office in Bangkok, has elaborated on the symptoms of smallpox monkeys. These include fever, chills, headache, enlarged lymph nodes, muscle pain, fatigue, and, in some cases, a cough or back pain. The disease progresses with the appearance of a rash, which starts on the face and spreads to other body parts, eventually forming pustules that eventually fall off. Patients typically recover within 2-4 weeks, but individuals with compromised immunity or underlying health conditions are at risk of developing serious complications such as pneumonia or death.

To safeguard against the contraction and spread of smallpox monkeys, the public is advised to stay updated on the latest news, particularly if traveling to countries where these cases have been reported. Precautionary measures akin to those for COVID-19, such as avoiding close contact, frequent hand washing, and seeking medical attention when symptoms arise, are recommended.

Efforts to combat the outbreak include the monitoring of patients in emergency rooms and outpatient departments across all hospitals in Bangkok, with specialized clinics for sexually transmitted diseases and dermatology also participating. Additionally, Sirindhorn Hospital has established an emerging disease control operation center to closely monitor the smallpox situation. Suspected cases are to be immediately quarantined and reported to ensure swift containment and necessary action.

Health authorities emphasize the importance of separating infected patients from others and stress that vaccination should be provided only to individuals who are at risk or close proximity to infected animals. Vaccination within 14 days of exposure is still effective. In case of illness, the public is urged to seek medical attention promptly, self-isolate, and refer to the health hotline provided by the Medical Office in Bangkok.

As the situation develops, it is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with health authorities and local healthcare providers in preventing the further spread of smallpox monkeys.
