Smart glasses are aiming to put your phone’s functionality into an always-on, wearable form factor. Companies are betting big on this future, with one contender in the U.S. market being China-based Rokid.

Rokid Glasses Offer a Screen, But Voice Assistant Struggles

A hands-on review of Rokid’s smart glasses reveals promising features alongside notable kinks, notably in voice command functionality.

Smart glasses promise a lot: taking pictures, making calls, and even translating menus, all from a device that’s always with you. while the technology is still evolving, Rokid is one of the companies pushing the boundaries. I spent 15 minutes with their aptly named Rokid Glasses, and it’s clear that while intriguing, these devices are still very much in growth.

A Sharper View, a Greener Display

What sets Rokid Glasses apart from competitors like meta’s Ray-bans is the inclusion of a screen. It’s a basic dual-micro LED display, projecting facts in a distinctive green, reminiscent of “The Matrix.” Despite its simplicity, the screen’s sharpness was surprisingly impressive, even if the functions were limited. The fact that the display is visible from outside the glasses is a plus, especially for features that rely on this sharp visual output.

Teleprompter and Translation Shine

One standout feature is the teleprompter, which displays your presentation text directly in your field of vision. Remarkably, the glasses use their onboard microphone to keep pace with your speech, scrolling the text as you speak. This worked smoothly even in a noisy surroundings, a significant achievement.

Translation capabilities also showed promise. During a brief demonstration, a Mandarin Chinese speaker’s words were translated into small snippets displayed on the screen. The microphone’s ability to capture this in a loud room was genuinely impressive. Actually, the microphones are so sensitive thay coudl possibly pick up conversations across a room, which is both cool and a little unnerving.

App Integration and Interoperability are Key

However, the Rokid Glasses stumble when it comes to voice assistant integration. The current implementation feels clunky and unreliable. Without a functional voice assistant to tie everything together, the overall experience could be frustrating for many. This could be a welcomed development for those in the smart glasses space who are not currently leading the charge in the U.S.market
