SmartGym, the Apple Design Awards finalist and Apple Watch App of the Year, has rolled out a substantial update to its workout application, adding new customization options and features designed to enhance the user experience. The update, released on Thursday, March 19, 2026, focuses on providing a more personalized and flexible fitness journey, catering to both beginners and experienced athletes. SmartGym is available for free on the App Store, with optional in-app subscriptions.
The latest version of SmartGym introduces AI-powered suggestions for warm-up and cool-down stretches, tailored to the specific muscle groups targeted during each workout. This feature aims to improve workout effectiveness and reduce the risk of injury by preparing the body for exercise and aiding in recovery afterward. Users have control over the duration of these segments and can choose whether they contribute to overall workout and recovery analysis, according to 9to5Mac.
For users who prefer a consistent workout structure, SmartGym now allows users to prevent the Smart Trainer from automatically replacing existing routines. However, the app encourages occasional full updates to avoid plateaus in progress. The update similarly introduces a more organized approach to workout routines, allowing users to categorize exercise sets into Warm Up, Main, and Cool Down segments. This segmentation provides greater flexibility in adding or removing exercises, particularly for longer, more complex workouts.
A new draft feature automatically saves unfinished routines, allowing users to resume their workouts later without losing progress. SmartGym has also added a “Workout Effort” setting, enabling users to define the intensity of their workouts and contribute to a more accurate assessment of overall training load and recovery needs. The app’s most frequently used screen, the Routine View, has been redesigned with refined layout, typography, animations, and alerts, aiming for a more focused and visually appealing user experience.

The update also streamlines exercise management. Users can now update an exercise across multiple routines simultaneously, saving time and ensuring consistency. SmartGym initially gained recognition for its personalized workout plans and has continued to expand its features, including integration with Strava, announced last month. The app’s ability to adapt to various equipment availability and fitness levels has contributed to its popularity, earning it an Editors’ Choice award and a ranking as the #1 Health & Fitness app in over 30 countries.

SmartGym’s continued focus on customization and user experience positions it as a strong contender in the increasingly competitive fitness app market. The developers have indicated they will continue to refine the app based on user feedback. Users can expect further updates and improvements in the coming months.
