As the smartphone market accelerates, Apple’s iPhone sales were flat in June, according to an independent study.

The new study comes after data from Chinese authorities revealed that iPhone sales have been on the rise since March.

Globally, smartphone sales jumped 6.5%, according to IDC, while sales to consumers rose 6%, according to Counterpoint Research.

Heavy discounts linked to China’s 618th shopping festival have helped spur consumers in the world’s biggest mobile phone market, with Xiaomi and resurgent Huawei Technologies making big gains this year.

IDC said Apple sold 45.2 million devices in the second quarter, up 1.5% from the same period a year earlier.

But Counterpoint, which tracks end-user sales, showed a 1% decline, and both research firms revealed a decline in iPhone market share.

Xiaomi is the fastest growing

Xiaomi was the fastest growing company, largely driven by new device models and sales in emerging markets.

Discounts on prices and promises of new AI service enhancements have also helped stabilize sales for Apple and market leader Samsung Electronics, which is also developing a new generation of AI-powered phones.

“Apple’s momentum in Q2 improved significantly from the negative growth seen in Q1,” said Nabila Popal, research director at IDC. “This was due in part to significant price discounting, promotions in many regions, and renewed customer confidence following the Worldwide Developers Conference, where Apple announced its long-awaited AI strategy.”
