  • Reverse the situation of underreporting: Violence is not something normalizable.
  • Actively involve federated entities and specialized mental health services that serve the population at risk in the collection of violations and their follow-up.
  • Promote and promote initiatives that incorporate the principles of the Convention in all fields related to mental health.
  • Identify, from a rights perspective, areas for improvement and elimination of actions that may be violating some rights or making it difficult to exercise.

From Salut Mental Catalunya they express their commitment “for guaranteeing a praxis for people with mental health problems and their families, based on principles of rights, based on detection and accompaniment, guidance and advice, awareness-raising and training, and the promotion of public and social policies” .[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_btn title=”VOLVER A NOTICIAS” style=”gradient-custom” gradient_custom_color_1=”#ffffff” gradient_custom_color_2=”#ffffff” gradient_text_color=”#005b50″ shape=”square” align=”center” i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-chevron-circle-left” add_icon=”true” link=”url:%2Fnoticias%2F|title:NOTICIAS||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Mental Health Catalonia presents the report on violations of rights in mental health for 2022

The document includes 269 registered cases, half of which occurred in the health field and more than 66% were committed by the Administration.

The Catalan Mental Health Federation has presented the results of Report of violations of rights in mental health during 2022. A document that contains 269 violations, more than 80% of which are grouped in Barcelona. 70% of the people who make the complaint are women, fact that reflects who performs the role of caregiver, and 51.7% of the people who receive these violations are women. This low percentage suggests an invisibility and underreporting by this group, a consequence of the double stigma of being a woman and having a mental health problem.

Another relevant fact is the fact that 1 out of every 2 discriminations collected in 2022 occurred in the health field and the Public Administration is the main discriminating agent (in more than 66% of the violations). The intersectionality of discrimination also stands out, as each case can involve more than one reason, with health being the main one in half of the cases. Lastly, regarding the more than 700 rights violated, quality public service (22.57%), moral (21.47%) and physical (15.4%) and health (14%) integrity stand out.

The presentation of the report was made within the framework of a conference, in which several discussion tables were held to analyze the results and conclusions of this document, which exposes the obstacles faced by people with mental health problems in terms of rights.

Mercé Torrentallé, recently appointed president of Salut Mental Catalunya, highlighted in her speech the need to inform the public because “Many of us do not know the rights that correspond to us and we cannot be co-responsible if we do not know them.” In this regard, he highlighted the importance of data collection “To be able to work so that these rights are not violated to more people. Fighting for non-violation is extremely important”.

SMC members displayed complaint posters during the presentation of the report.

Conclusions and future challenges

From the results collected in the report and the root of the topics discussed during the conference, various conclusions emerged in terms of human rights, as well as the challenges to be faced in the future.

Among the conclusions, the following stand out: the need to take into account the intersectionality in mental healththe fact that the significant life project is at risklos legislative changes as a window of opportunity saturation of the health system and the violation of rights derived from it and the need to speak openly about institutional violence in terms of mental health.

Regarding the challenges, the Catalan federation assumes the need to:

  • Reverse the situation of underreporting: Violence is not something normalizable.
  • Actively involve federated entities and specialized mental health services that serve the population at risk in the collection of violations and their follow-up.
  • Promote and promote initiatives that incorporate the principles of the Convention in all fields related to mental health.
  • Identify, from a rights perspective, areas for improvement and elimination of actions that may be violating some rights or making it difficult to exercise.

From Salut Mental Catalunya they express their commitment “for guaranteeing a praxis for people with mental health problems and their families, based on principles of rights, based on detection and accompaniment, guidance and advice, awareness-raising and training, and the promotion of public and social policies” .
