The thermometer in Älvsbyn showed a bone-chilling minus 32.7 degrees during the night, making it the coldest temperature in Sweden. However, the southern region of Österlen experienced slightly warmer temperatures at -1.4 degrees. Despite the sub-zero temperatures, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) predicts that the cold snap will soon give way to milder weather across the country.

Both January 5 and 6 are considered national ice days, with all of SMHI’s measuring stations experiencing freezing temperatures. Meteorologist Linus Karlsson noted that the cold snap is somewhat irregular and does not occur every year.

However, relief is on the way. Milder air is expected to find its way into central and northern Norrland, resulting in temperatures between 10 and 20 degrees below zero during the day. While freezing temperatures are expected to persist in the southern regions such as Götaland and Svealand, Karlsson anticipates that the cold snap will eventually give way to warmer weather.

By the beginning of next week, a complete reversal is expected with warmer temperatures in Norrland and potentially plus degrees in the southern parts of the country by Wednesday and Thursday.
