The government of the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, points to more than 400 wildfires that are out of control, leaving more than 20,000 Canadians homeless. The US sent over 600 firefighters and equipment to Canada. Other countries are also helping.

Smoke from the fires has already darkened the skies of hundreds of Canadian and US cities. In some places, fog radically reduced visibility, and skyscrapers almost disappeared from the horizon. During the night, New York recorded the worst air quality in the world for a few hours, and when dawn came, the air still smelled of burning.

Health officials from Vermont to South Carolina and as far west as Ohio and Kansas are warning residents about respiratory problems that can be caused by spending time outdoors due to high levels of fine particles in the atmosphere.
