Babies whose mothers smoked cannabis are more likely to experience growth delays or prematurity. But this damage is out of all proportion to that caused by alcohol.

Pregnancy and cannabis, it’s a bit like alcohol and medications: it’s better not to mix them. A study just published in the scientific journal Jama shows that smoking joints when you are pregnant increases the risk of complications, for both the mother and the unborn child. The researchers, who followed 9,000 women including 600 cannabis smokers, revealed that the proportion of babies with growth retardationlow birth weight, born premature or died at birth is significantly higher among mothers who used cannabis throughout their pregnancy. A phenomenon closely correlated with the level of consumption: high consumption is more strongly associated with certain unfavorable pregnancy outcomes. On the other hand, those who stop smoking during the first trimester do not seem to show any difference from non-smokers.
