Smoking prevention, are governments doing enough?

Tobacco use causes one death every 10 seconds somewhere in the world.
Among the main prevention measures against smoking are taxes and the placement of warning signs on packages.
According to Ensanut 2022, there are 15 million Mexicans between the ages of 12 and 65 who smoke.

It is not a secret that the Smoking is a serious problem with a high impact on health and for this reason it is worth promoting its prevention. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that it is an addiction that produces four million deaths each year. In other words, every 10 seconds is responsible for the death of a person.

The list of diseases with which it is related is quite extensive, although lung cancer stands out. About this tumor, more than two million cases of lung cancer and 1.7 million deaths are registered each year. In the Americas, more than 324,000 new cases and nearly 262,000 deaths are registered each year, a figure that places it as the leading cause of death from tumors in the region.

Current panorama in Mexico

For its part, in Mexico there were 7,588 new cases and 7,100 deaths from this neoplasm during 2020. Most people are diagnosed in phase four of the disease, with little chance of cure or survival. On the other hand, in early stages health can be recovered.

While according to the National Health and Nutrition Survey (Ensanut) 2022, about 15 million people between the ages of 12 and 65 smoke, which represents 17.6 percent of the population in that age range; 684 thousand adolescents are smokers and their first contact with tobacco was an average of 14.3 years old.

Returning to the initial topic, it is estimated that every year 8.7 million people die from tobacco, according to the WHO. Of these, 1.3 million do not consume tobacco directly, but are exposed to it passively. According to international authorities, people exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke “are at risk of dying from heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancers.”

Prevention against smoking around the world

Although these figures are still high, progress has been made in terms of the adoption of health promotion policies by countries to try to curb tobacco use in their populations. In it WHO 2023 report on the global tobacco epidemic, the organization notes that some 5.6 billion people currently live in countries where at least one of the six measures promoted by the organization for tobacco control, that is, 71% of the world’s population.

In accordance with Statesmanaround 79% of WHO member countries have introduced warning labels on cigarette packages, although not all to the same extent.

At the same time, 38% of the countries surveyed have implemented strict rules on no-smoking areas, while around 34% have strict bans on tobacco advertising. While 44 countries have not yet implemented tobacco control measures and 53 have not yet completely banned smoking in health facilities.
