Snap Inc. Seeks Backend Engineer to Enhance Bitmoji and Core Services
Snap Inc., the technology company behind Snapchat, is actively recruiting a Backend Engineer to join its Bitmoji team, signaling continued investment in the popular digital avatar platform and the underlying infrastructure supporting its core services. The company, which believes “the camera presents the greatest opportunity to improve the way people live and communicate,” is looking for a skilled engineer to contribute to systems serving hundreds of millions of users globally.
Expanding the Digital Self with Bitmoji
Bitmoji, described as the “digital identity used by Snapchat users every day,” has become a central feature of the Snapchat experience. The platform allows users to create personalized avatars that are integrated into conversations, self-expression tools, and augmented reality experiences. According to a company release, Bitmoji enables communication “in ways that words alone could never capture.” This emphasis on visual communication underscores Snap’s broader mission to empower users to express themselves and connect with others.
Core Responsibilities for a Scalable Future
The Backend Engineer role will focus on the design, implementation, and operation of Snap’s most critical and scalable services. These include vital components such as user identity services, the social “friend graph,” and the core data persistence layer. The successful candidate will collaborate across teams to translate product requirements into innovative solutions, prioritizing high quality through rigorous testing and debugging.
A key aspect of the position involves advocating for and implementing best practices in areas like availability, scalability, operational excellence, and cost management. The engineer will also be expected to participate in incident investigation and resolution, demonstrating a strong understanding of system operations.
Required Skills and Experience
Snap is seeking candidates with proven experience in backend services or distributed systems, and a “proven track record of operating highly-available systems at significant scale.” Applicants should be capable of independently executing medium-sized features, spanning several weeks and multiple pull requests.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in a technical field – such as Computer Science – or equivalent professional experience, alongside at least two years of software development experience. Proficiency in Java and/or Golang is essential.
Preferred qualifications include experience with NoSQL solutions, Memcache/Redis, Kubernetes, or cloud services offered by Google or AWS. Experience in areas like large-scale microservices, cloud computing, infrastructure design, security, networking, data storage, and machine learning are also highly valued.
Compensation and Benefits
The expected pay range for this position is 155,000 – 171,000 CAD, with the final salary determined by factors including skills, experience, location, and market conditions. The role is also eligible for equity in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
Snap emphasizes a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employees and their families, including paid parental leave, medical coverage, and mental health support programs. “Snap Inc. is its own community, so we’ve got your back!” a company representative stated.
“Default Together” Workplace Policy
Snap operates under a “default together” policy, requiring team members to work in the office at least four days per week. The company believes that in-person collaboration fosters a stronger culture and enhances innovation.
Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
Snap Inc. is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. The company’s equal opportunity employment policy explicitly prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, disability, gender, age, sexual orientation, and other protected characteristics. Snap also states it will consider qualified applicants with criminal histories in accordance with applicable laws.
