Expected to be launched by Qualcomm in late 2023, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has generated significant anticipation. However, according to the Weibo leaker, Digital Chat Station, the price of this flagship processor “seems to be a bit high.” Consequently, some manufacturers are considering utilizing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or a Dimensity chipset for their upcoming standard smartphones.

This means that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 might be reserved for the Pro, Plus, and/or Ultra flagship phones of certain brands. Notably, manufacturers like OPPO and vivo have previously followed a similar approach, equipping their standard flagship phones with older Snapdragon chipsets or the current Dimensity processor.

The leaker’s statement that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s price is on the higher side signals a potential shift in the industry in 2024, with more companies choosing to prioritize profit margins by adopting alternative chipsets.

However, it is important to note that both the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity flagship processors are highly capable and feature-rich chipsets. Therefore, the majority of users would not encounter any significant drawbacks if high-end phones released next year opt for these processors instead of the latest Snapdragon silicon.

In an accompanying survey, respondents were asked if they were concerned about high-end phones using last year’s flagship System-on-Chip (SoC). Out of 171 votes, 24% strongly opposed the idea, while 54% believed it depended on the pricing and other features. 22% of respondents indicated that they did not care about the choice of SoC.

As the industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how smartphone brands will navigate the challenge of balancing cutting-edge technology with cost considerations. Consumers will undoubtedly have varying preferences and expectations, influencing the choices made by manufacturers in the competitive market.
