Net profit up sharply by 10% compared to 2019, the last financial year before the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the strike movements that have impacted it, like the controllers during the Christmas weekend, the SNCF is doing well economically.
A result in line with the figures presented by the public company at the end of the first half. Over the first six months of the year, the SNCF posted a turnover of 20.3 billion euros, up 14% compared to the same period before the pandemic. The previous record dated from 2017 with a net profit of nearly 1.5 billion euros.
A number that can still increase
Questioned following these revelations, the SNCF does not wish to comment. “The SNCF group does not confirm any figures. The results for 2022 will be presented next February. Unwelcome results in the current context. Indeed, the railway group has faced the demands of railway workers, who have demanded a rise in wages. This indicator could have been used as leverage during the mandatory annual negotiations (NAO).
“Management has been trying to keep this figure secret for several weeks,” said a source interviewed by the newspaper. Another problem, these results could increase further with the sale of Akiem, a subsidiary of the SNCF, to the Caisse des dépôts et placement du Québec (CDPQ). These are “several hundred million euros” which could then be added to the balance.
