This summer, the SNCF sold 4% more train tickets compared to summer 2022. Ecology is at the heart of the concerns of vacationers, who, in addition to the TGV, have used regional lines more.
The train was popular this summer, with 4% more tickets sold compared to 2022. Why this preference? “We can do it at the last moment. It can be taken from everywhere, whereas for the plane, you always have to go to an airport, and there are not necessarily any side”, explains a traveler. And that’s not the only reason. “I pollute the planet less, that’s for sure”, adds another. Ecology is at the heart of concerns. The train is the least polluting mode of transport. 40% of TGVs were full this summer.
The SNCF had anticipated this influx
Unsurprisingly, trains to the Atlantic and the Mediterranean remain the most popular. But the big news is the increase of 15% towards Alsace and 6% towards the Alps. It’s not just the TGV that is popular. Vacationers have also chosen to discover a region. “10% of French people have taken the TER in addition, quite simply because the regions have decided to really boost traffic, that is to say more trains, and especially on fares”, indicates Christophe Fanichet, CEO of SNCF Voyageurs. The SNCF had anticipated this record influx, and made 450,000 more tickets available.
