The northeastern United States was hit with a severe storm on Thursday, with snow, rain and strong winds leaving almost 700,000 homes and businesses without power.

According to the North American weather service, wind gusts between 80 and 97 km/h hit coastal areas and inland New England.

Maine and New Hampshire suffered the impact of power outages, with around 330,000 and 174,000 homes affected, respectively, according to the portal poweroutage.us. Local officials said snow was to blame for downed trees and power lines.

In total, almost 700,000 homes and businesses were affected by power outages, reported the Associated Press (AP).

“This was practically a classic Easter. It’s definitely a top quality storm for April. It’s not crazy that we get snow in April, but we usually don’t get double-digit amounts [de centímetros de neve],” said Stephen Baron, meteorologist at the weather service in York, Maine.

More than a foot of snow fell in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where some residents affected by power outages stayed in hotels.

Northern New England and New York

Heavy snow also affected road traffic in the northern parts of New England and New York, with several accidents reported.

A tree fell on a vehicle in Westchester County, New York, on Wednesday, killing a woman, the only passenger, police revealed.

Dozens of flights at airports in the region were canceled or delayed. Many schools and government offices were closed in northern areas.

Strong winds and torrential rain also hit Boston.

Several states affected by tornadoes and other adverse weather conditions, such as Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia, continued cleaning work this Thursday. Due to this storm, at least three deaths were recorded at the beginning of the week.
