Norway experienced significant traffic chaos and widespread road closures after a heavy snowstorm hit the country this week. Commuters were left stranded for hours, with some expressing frustration and even desperation during their ordeal.

Bente Harlem, a frustrated driver stuck in the snow chaos for six hours, told NRK on Monday evening, “I’m losing my patience and I need to pee!” Harlem had started her journey from Askim in Sweden in the late afternoon but only managed to get halfway to Ørje before coming to a halt.

The worst congestion occurred on the E18 route, where large wagons became stuck in the snow, causing traffic gridlock. Even on Tuesday morning, parts of the road remained closed in the direction of the Swedish border, as plow trucks and tow trucks worked tirelessly to clear the way.

The prolonged queues resulted in power shortages for many electric cars, leading to a situation where several motorists required assistance. The police continued their efforts throughout the night, finally resolving the majority of the traffic jams in the early morning hours.

Gisle Sveen, a police officer from Norway’s Eastern Police District, stated to NRK that recovery operations were underway, with cars still stranded but assistance reaching them. The Red Cross and Norsk folkehjelp also played a vital role, providing relief and aid to tired, cold, and thirsty individuals stuck in the chaos.

Oslo, the capital city, also faced its share of challenges, as heavy snowfall disrupted traffic and led to multiple buses getting stuck. In one instance, passengers had to disembark and physically push a bus free from the snow.

Despite preliminary improvements, meteorologists in Norway are warning residents of the possibility of another round of snow on Thursday, exacerbating the already challenging conditions on the roads.

As winter holds its icy grip on the country, authorities, emergency services, and commuters continue to battle adverse weather conditions, working together to ensure safety on Norway’s winter roads.
