Lahore: More troops have been deployed to rescue those stranded in Pakistan’s dead after 21 tourists were killed in a snowstorm. The military estimates that more than 1.5 million cars are stranded in the area. The Pakistani government has blamed the accident on passengers ignoring the freezing warning.
Tourists have died of frostbite in the Muri Hills of northern Pakistan. Islamabad police officer Naveed Iqbal, his wife, six children and 21 friends were among those killed in the blast. Oxygen depletion was caused by the vehicle’s heat-on journey as snow fell. The military says 300 passengers were rescued from the area after the crash. Many more are still stranded in various places.
According to government sources, passengers were flocking to the place as the beautiful winter scenes spread on social media. More than one and a half lakh cars have been recovered since the accident. Many are believed to have abandoned the vehicle and escaped. Abandoned vehicles filled many lanes, making traffic impassable. Emergency and travel restrictions were imposed in the area in the wake of the accident. The Pakistani Prime Minister had said yesterday that he would conduct a thorough investigation into the tragedy.
