Which States Are Facing the Brunt of the Storm?
The Northeast and Midwest are, predictably, bearing the brunt of the snowfall. Though,several Southern states experienced a dusting of snow on January 25,with the potential for more accumulation into January 26.
States waking up to significant snowfall on January 25 included New York,New Jersey,Pennsylvania,Connecticut,Massachusetts,and more.
How Much Snow Is Expected, State by State?
Major metropolitan areas, including New York City and Boston, could accumulate between 12 and 18 inches of snow, exceeding a foot, according to multiple reports.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued a statement on Sunday,assuring residents that his administration was prepared for the icy conditions,providing shelter,and transitioning students to remote learning by closing school buildings.
“As snowfall begins to blanket our city and conditions become hazardous, closing school buildings is a necessary step to keep New Yorkers safe,” Mamdani stated. “Over the past week, my administration has prepared for this moment – ensuring devices are in hand, families are informed and educators are ready to welcome students online.”
Why did this storm happen? A polar vortex, a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both poles, dipped southward, bringing frigid Arctic air into a large portion of the United States. This combined with moisture from the Atlantic ocean to create ideal conditions for heavy snowfall.
